A set of nine French 18th Century hand-coloured copper engravings of dog breeds by French polymath, Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) from his Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particulare (1749–1804). Comte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author who influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin.
Breeds: Chien Mulet (male and female); Le Gredin, Le Pyrame; Chien de Russie (male and female); Le Bichon, Le Dogue de Forte Race; Le Chien des Alpes, Chien Mulet; and Le Chien Turc et Gredin and Grand Chien Loup.
The engravers are Pierre Gabriel Berthault (1737-1831), Etienne Claude Voysard (1746–1812) and Goulet.
They are presented in pale blue mounts with an embossed line and in muted gold ridged frames and non-reflective glass. The price is for set, but they can be sold individually for £145 each.
