A set of six early 19th century hand-coloured engravings of shells by Captain Thomas Brown from his Conchology Great Britain & Ireland first published by William Home Lizars (1788-1859) in 1827.

Captain Brown (1785-1862) was a well-known natural history scientist and malacologist. Brown became a curator of the Manchester Natural History Society's Museum and was later elected fellow of the Linnean Society and President of the Royal Physical Society.  He travelled extensively and drew his subjects from live specimens which he found on his travels. 

They are presented in a distressed gold frame with linen mounts and non-reflective glass.
